Michael Schmidt's unparalleled love for poetry, ancient and modern, brings to life the continuing vitality and importance of the world's earliest surviving poem, with fascinating new insights on every page. In this illuminating book, Schmidt sheds a kaleidoscopic light on Gilgamesh, its journeys, and its possible futures. It is also the newest classic in the canon of world literature. George, author of The Babylonian Gilgamesh Epic "A great pleasure to read. Gilgamesh is the most ancient long poem known to exist. Schmidt has written a stimulating literary study that makes this oldest of poems feel new, exciting, and on the move."-Peter McDonald, translator of The Homeric Hymns "Michael Schmidt's book is a lively and instructive read, full of insight and response that bring a new voice to the poem's reception."-A. I cannot imagine a better introduction to Gilgamesh, but it is also something more than that. "An insightful, stimulating book sure to breathe new life into the would-be immortal king."-Publishers Weekly "This is a remarkable and hugely worthwhile book. Listening Woman is a particularly satisfying one as the diverse strands of the novel build to a violent climax in a remote and desolate corner of the vividly described deserts of the American south-west. It is this intersection of police procedural and cultural exploration that make Hillerman’s Navajo stories so special. Amongst the Navajo nation the past is not past, with, for example, the repercussions of Kit Carson’s brutal conquest in the 19th century, still reverberating into the present. They are also explorations Navajo culture and belief. Careers Staff Directory Accessibility Site Map Legals Our Ethical Principles. Hillerman’s Navajo novels are more than your typical crime fare. Instead he agrees to look into a number of cold cases including a brutal double murder and the mystery of a disappeared helicopter, to give him time to try to trace the man who tried to kill him. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police does not want to babysit a national scout jamboree taking place on the reservation, particularly as he has just almost been run down by a homicidal driver who is still on the loose. Summary: a fascinating insight into the Navajo nation via the medium of a gripping manhunt After a week of riding with Ethan, The Narrator and Ethan are caught in a blinding snowstorm on their return to Starkfield. Temporarily unable to get to and from the train station in Corbury Flats, The Narrator acts on Gow's suggestion and asks Ethan to transport him back and forth. They provide The Narrator with bits and pieces of information about Ethan, which make him even more intrigued with the story of Ethan's life. Ned Hale, and Harmon Gow, a long-time resident and former stagecoach driver, about Ethan. The Narrator questions his landlady, Mrs. The main story, which describes the three and a half days before and including Ethan and Mattie's sledding accident, is written in third person - an omniscient narration that allows Wharton to relate the thoughts and feelings of all the characters.Įthan Frome begins when The Narrator, an engineer who is living temporarily in Starkfield, Massachusetts while working on a project in a nearby town, becomes curious about Ethan Frome. The frame story takes place nearly twenty years after the events of the main story and is written in first person, revealing the thoughts and feelings of The Narrator. The "frame" is The Narrator's vision of the tragedy that befalls Ethan Frome. Edith Wharton wrote Ethan Frome as a frame story - meaning that the prologue and epilogue constitute a "frame" around the main story. Every one of them felt real and different, and it was nice to have so many characters without feeling overwhelmed or confused as to who was who the whole time. I also liked the diversity of the characters. The story felt very immersive, and at times I was feeling that isolation and anxiety along with the characters. While everyone was panicking about the potential murderer, I felt that panic. She’s really good at creating an atmosphere and getting you involved in the story. One of the things that Ruth Ware does well is the actual writing. I was anticipating a really captivating thriller, and while I was interested for this story, it seemed to unravel a bit for me at the end. I think compared to The Turn of the Key, this one didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had for it. I don’t want to spoil anything because honestly it’s best to go into this one knowing as little as possible. I ended up giving the book 3.5 out of 5 stars. The app founders and employees are there to discuss finances and the potential buyout of their company, and during this retreat there is a massive avalanche that results in them being trapped in the resort. This book is written for people who are also suffering from anorexia to let them know they’re not alone, but Moisin never takes on a know-it-all tone. Kid Rex is a book about hope, and looking to oneself and to those around you to help get out from under the hold of such a dreadful and powerful disease. Her ensuing depression quickens her already dangerous downward spiral. Shortly after this devastating therapy visit, the Twin Towers fall in the September 11th attacks, and Moisin watches it happen from her apartment window. He looks at her doubtfully and says, “No, I don’t think you’re an anorexic.” All that runs through her mind is that she must be fat. She tells him that she’s an anorexic who needs to go to some group meetings to work through her condition. When she recognizes that she has a serious problem, though, she finally owns up to a therapist working at her university. She learns how to deceive the therapists her worried family sends her to, giving them all of the symptoms of depression so they’ll misdiagnose her and let her continue to be anorexic. After knowing other friends with anorexia and being baffled by their behavior (often wondering, “Why doesn’t she just eat?!”) Moisin suddenly found herself prone to the same disease, not eating at all and going weeks at a time taking in nothing but water and the occasional black coffee. Kid Rex is the story of one woman’s struggle to overcome anorexia. The Inspiring True Account of a Life Salvaged from Anorexia, Despair and Dark Days in New York City |
